On how the Internet blows the physical limits of a museum.
Various museums around the world are getting increasingly involved in digital media as they seek to expand their spheres of action and radiate beyond the walls of the impressive buildings they put together as patiently as their reputation; one collection, exhibition, seminar or special event after the other.
In 2005, Mirko Zardini, the CCA’s new Director plans to build a digital presence for the Canadian Centre for Architecture to match the reputation Phyllis Lambert, its founder, had given it since its creation. A digital CCA that would develop a continuous relationship with its audience and help the museum fulfil its mission of educating the public to the role of architecture in society. As Mirko simply stated his mission back then -and that of Bluesponge: "Make architecture a public concern"
Bluesponge proposes a broadcasting platform for the CCA’s activities that goes beyond the physical boundaries of the Museum or of its web site. By extension, the very concept of visitor would evolve from people visiting the Baile street facilities in Montreal to include the audience of the new digital CCA, wherever they might be.
Besides the digital platform and the online promotion of exhibitions, Bluesponge supports the Institution in a genuine business design process, helping it deal with the paradigm shifts in museology in terms of content production, curatorial practicies and publications- all concepts at the very core of the CCA’s practice.
CCA online overcomes the traditional content architecure and navigation processes to provide the visitor with a more holistic content experience. The collection, exhibitions, library and countless conferences and events organized by the institution are available in a systematic and almost intuitive manner.
The site unveils some unknown aspects of the CCA and engages the visitors with an extraordinary profusion of activities, concepts and ideas that challenge their everyday environment and the fundamental role of architecture in shaping it.
